NCAA Water Polo

In recent years a significant number of Australian water polo players have competed for a variety of US colleges and universities on part or full scholarships.  Recently Aussie players have tasted unprecedented success in winning a number of NCAA championships for the University of Southern California (USC) Men's and Women's Water Polo Programs.  Players including Joel Dennerley, Hannah Buckling, Jeremy Davies, Jayde Appel, Mace Rapsey and James Clark have all contributed to USC's victories.

Other names such as Alicia Brightwell (Arizona State University), John Hahn (Pepperdine), Claire Pierce (Cal State East Bay), Michaela Davies (Harwick College), Jess Brooks (Long Beach State) have all been awarded a variety of honours for their feats in the pool while lining up for their college teams.

Some of Australia's top Olympians have had memorable stints in the NCAA competition - Bronwen Knox (Harwick College - Beijing 2008 and London 2012), Sophie Smith (Hartwick College - London 2012), Rowena Webster (Arizona State University - London 2012), Geoffrey Clark (Pepperdine - Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992),Joel Dennerley (London 2012), James Clark (London 2012)

How do I get a college water polo scholarship?

US College water polo coaches use information and results achieved in domestic and international junior and senior competitions to find the players they believe can fit into their college teams.  In order to be sought after you must prove to a coach that you can achieve a level high enough to complement and benefit their team.

What are the academic requirements to be eligible for a water polo scholarship?

 Every college water polo coach has a different preference in the level of academics he requires.

Men's Water Polo at a glance:

  • Men's Water Polo is played at 43 schools across the USA
  • There are 3 separate divisions of competition (Div I, Div II, Div III)
  • 24 out of the 43 schools are based in California but the remaining 19 schools are spread across 11 other states

Women's Water Polo at a glance:

  • Women's Water Polo is played at 61 schools across the USA
  • There are 3 separate divisions of competition (Div I, Div II, Div III)
  • 32 out of the 61 schools are based in California but the remaining 29 schools are spread across 17 other states
  • NCAA Women's Water Polo has been running for 13 years and UCLA has won 7 times
